"MY STUFF" BAGS:

The Dr. Laura Foundation has received funding to continue making My Stuff Bags available to non-profit organizations around the country.  Although the number of bags distributed may decrease due to the availability of funds, NN CASA will continue to request bags from this organization as long as the need is there for our local children.  Please see www.mystuffbags.org for more information regarding this excellent resource for our children.  For more information regarding NN CASA's current stock of bags, please contact the CASA office at 926-3642.

INSERVICE TRAINING RESOURCES

CASA encourages continued education for effective & high quality advocacy skills. We ask that within the fiscal year (July 1-June 30) volunteers complete 12 hours of in-service training. These hours can be accumulated in many ways such as attending CASA In-Service Trainings, reading the CASA newsletter “The Alliance”, e-Learning, independent research on topics relating to child welfare, child abuse prevention, legislation, etc., using the lending library of books and videos at the CASA office, attending community trainings and/or referring the CASA staff & volunteers to local trainings, assisting with the training program, etc. If you would like to know how many in-service training credits you have for this year please contact Amia Barrows, Volunteer Training Coordinator 926-8791 or abarrows@nngov.com. This month check out books by Geoffrey Canada “Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun” or “Reaching Up for Manhood”. Also check out the following videos & DVD’s: “Richmond Family Drug Treatment Court”, “Building Rapport with Children” & “Staying Focused & Motivated”.

VOLUNTEER ADVISORY COMMITTEE:

Debbie is currently seeking input from casa volunteer to advice program staff on the planning of recognition events, outreach activities, recruitment, and training. These activities include both activities with CASA children and other areas where CASA volunteers have the opportunity to build and strengthen the CASA program.  Please contact Debbie Gray at 926-3644 if you can share your time and talent.

CASEWORK REMINDERS:

The Judges from Newport News J&DR Court have requested that CASA reports are to be submitted to the court on the Monday prior to the hearing. This means that reports will need to be submitted two weeks in advance in order for CASA to review and advise you on any corrections or concerns that appear in the court report. For example: If the court date is Tuesday February 27th, the report would be due Thursday February 15th and then submitted to the court on Monday February 19th. Monthly reminders will be sent to volunteers in regards to the report due date. Please feel free to contact Christine Matthews, Program Coordinator 926-8790 for any questions or concerns. Thanks for your hard work!

CASA SPEAKER'S BUREAU:

CASA needs your help speaking in the community to recruit new volunteers.  Program staff are happy to attend any speaking engagement with a volunteer to provide support and assistance.  The value of volunteer speakers is the audience hears directly from "front line" volunteers who meet with the parties on a regular basis.  There is no substitute for the passion you as a volunteer can share with other members of our community.  Please consider becoming a speaker for the NN CASA program.
For more info contact Debbie Gray at 926-3644.
